Reading City were back at The Rivermoor for just the third game since the start of 2020 due to the unfavourable weather conditions, but it wasn’t the return they would have hoped for as they lost to 17th place Brimscombe & Thrupp to an unfortunate goal.
Match Report by Nick Bird.
The game was end to end early on, but both sides couldn’t pick out the final ball to create a chance. Brimsombe had the first close chance as the right-back put a good cross in for Pitt who headed just wide of the right post as Charlie York was rooted to his spot.
Reading City came close as Dan Davies won the aerial battle following the goalkeeper’s kick and he headed it to Jordan Alves who dribbled down the middle before sliding the ball to his right where Josh Blackwood had a shot first time saved by the goalkeeper.
That was all the chances for the first half as neither side could find the spark of creativity needed to break the opposition down.
Unfortunately for the Cityzens, Brimscombe & Thrupp found the opening goal early in the second half in unfortunate circumstances. One of the Brimcombe midfielders launched a long ball forward which Charlie York went out to catch, but it bounced just outside his box, York’s decision to try and catch the ball resulted in the ball bouncing past him and being headed into the empty net by Jack Smith, Reading City 0-1 Brimscombe & Thrupp.
Reading City had a great opportunity to tie the game as Ellis Cowd headed a cross back across goal from a free-kick to Dan Davies, but his touch was poor, and the Brimscombe goalkeeper cleared the ball.
Brimsombe & Thrupp had a chance late on to double their lead as Michael Butcher attempted to pass the ball back to Charlie York but under-hit his pass and it was intercepted by the Brimsombe & Thrupp striker, but Charlie York shut him down and pulled off a good save to prevent a second goal.
It was a quiet game as neither side could break the other down, but Brimscombe & Thrupp got a little bit of luck which they capitalised on to score, and it was enough to win the game.
Reading City will next face Bishops Cleeve at The Rivermoor on Saturday (14/3/20) at 3 pm in the Hellenic Premier League.
